In the usually uneventful town of Forks, Washington, Bella Swan has recently become the prey in a dangerous game of cat and mouse. A bloodthirsty vampire by the name of James has set his sights on her and will not rest until she has been captured. In light of this situation, the Cullens, a coven of “vegetarian” vampires who do not prey on human blood, have decided that it is their duty to protect Bella. Moving into a mansion on the outskirts of the town of Forks, they befriend the girl and attempt to lead a somewhat normal life in the process of protecting her and the rest of the small population. However, bigger trouble is on the horizon, and when the Cullens realize that they may need more help than expected, they contact their son, Edward, who had been travelling through Europe at the time of his family’s arrival in Forks.
When Edward arrives in the small town, he discovers, to his horror, that Bella is his one true ‘singer’. La tua cantante as some of the oldest vampires might say. This means that he has an absolutely unquenchable thirst for her blood and no other blood has ever smelled so sweet to him. He struggles with this new found challenge as well as a burgeoning attraction that was unexpected for both of them.
In the meantime, Jasper Hale, Edward’s brother, manages to capture and kill James. Although this would seem to be a solution to most of their problems, James’ mate, Victoria, is blinded by rage, and goes on a killing rampage throughout the Olympic Peninsula, also targeting other covens of vegetarian vampires in the north. Tanya, of the Denali coven, brings with her reports of Victoria’s mayhem as well as the sad news that two of her own clan have already fallen to her rage. Victoria will continue to target the vegetarians- the “weak links” as she has defined them – until someone puts a stop to it. Is this a fight that the Cullens can win?
